What is a social share preview?
When you paste a link into Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Slack, or WhatsApp, the platform shows a rich card with an image, title, and description instead of a bare URL. That card is built from special meta tags in your page's HTML — mainly Open Graph (og:) tags and Twitter Card (twitter:) tags. This tool fetches your page, reads those tags, and renders the cards so you can see the result before you share.
How to use the tool
It takes one step:
- Enter the URL of the page you want to check.
- See preview cards for Facebook, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn.
- Review the checklist of missing or weak tags.
- Fix the tags on your page, then re-check.
The tags that control your share card
A good share card relies on a handful of meta tags:
- og:title — the headline shown on the card.
- og:description — the summary text beneath the title.
- og:image — the preview image (the single most important tag for engagement).
- og:url and og:site_name — the canonical share URL and your brand name.
- twitter:card — set to summary_large_image for a large image on X.
- twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image — X-specific overrides, otherwise it falls back to the og: tags.
The ideal Open Graph image size
For a crisp, large share card, use an og:image of at least 1200×630 pixels, which is the 1.91:1 ratio Facebook and LinkedIn use. Keep the file reasonably small (ideally under about 1MB) so it loads quickly when the platform scrapes it. Avoid putting important text near the edges, since different platforms crop slightly differently. If you skip og:image entirely, most platforms show no image or pick a random one from the page.
Why previews sometimes look wrong or outdated
Social platforms cache the first version of a card they scrape, so if you change your tags the old preview can linger. After updating your tags, force a refresh using the platform's own debugger — Facebook's Sharing Debugger, X's Card Validator, or LinkedIn's Post Inspector — which re-scrapes the page and clears the cache. This tool always fetches the live page, so it reflects your current tags, not a cached copy.
Pro tip
Set og: tags as your baseline and only add twitter: tags when you want X to differ — X falls back to Open Graph automatically. Give every important page a unique, descriptive title and a purpose-built 1200×630 image; generic or missing images are the top reason shared links get ignored. To build the underlying tags, pair this with our Meta Tag Generator, and check tag completeness with our OpenGraph Completeness Checker.
